The Mass Uprising in Bangladesh in 2024 and Its Impact on India–Bangladesh Trade Relations: A Brief Analysis Soumen Mondal, State Government–Approved College Teacher, Department of Political Science, Shibpuram Das College, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal, India
India and Bangladesh share deep-rooted bonds of history, language, culture, and numerous other commonalities. The outstanding nature of bilateral ties is reflected in an all-encompassing partnership based on sovereignty, equality, trust, and understanding. This partnership has evolved as a model for bilateral relations for the entire region and beyond. However, the internal political situation in Bangladesh has been complicated at different times. At times, military coups and interim governments have governed Bangladesh. Finally, in 2009, a stable government was formed under the leadership of the Awami League, which remained in power for 15 years. From 2009 to 2024, the opposition made serious allegations against the ruling Awami League government, including widespread corruption, human rights violations, the loss of freedom of speech, and vote rigging. The ongoing movement demanding student rights and quota reform intensified in 2024, taking the form of a mass movement. This movement led to a mass uprising in Bangladesh, and the Prime Minister was forced to resign, which ultimately led to the fall of the government. In this political context, the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India have deteriorated. This article examines the changing nature of India-Bangladesh trade relations in the post-Sheikh Hasina period, under the interim government, focusing on areas of collaboration as well as emerging challenges. Through an analysis of the historical context, current diplomatic landscape, and prospects, this paper aims to provide insights into the complexities of bilateral trade relations between the two nations.
