Rabindranath as an Individual in Sunil Gangopadhyay’s Novel Ranu o Bhanu
Debasish Ghosh, Research Scholar, Visva-Bharati University, West Bengal, India
As a modern novelist Sunil Gangopadhyay has thought about Rabindranath all his life. The relationship between the predecessor and the successor has changed repeatedly. Sometimes the successor has wanted to deny the predecessor, and sometimes he has rediscovered it. And this changing experience of Rabindranath is reflected in his essays, poems, short stories, and novels.
Sunil's changing equation about Rabindranath is mostly from a literary perspective. At one time, he wanted to deny Rabindranath, but later he realized that 'there is no way without Rabindranath', although Sunil also had deep respect for Rabindranath, like everyone else of his time and contemporaries. He used to think 'If I could be a man like Rabindranath'
Sunil’s Writing about Rabindranath is diverse. Rabindranath is present as a character in two of Sunil's novels. 'Ranu and Bhanu' and 'Prothom Alo'. The novel 'Ranu and Bhanu' (Bio-novel) that we are currently discussing in this article.
Ranu Adhikari (Mukhopadhyay) became very close to Rabindranath at one point. Rabindranath wrote countless letters to Ranu. Rabindranath became Ranu's 'Bhanudada'. Although the relationship between the two did not progress in a very straightforward way until the end. The equation of the relationship between Rabindranath and Ranu Adhikari is the main theme of the novel 'Ranu and Bhanu'. How Rabindranath the person is presented in the novel is our discussion.
In the novel, we see that just as the novelist Sunil has tried to capture Rabindranath's time by keeping a sense of history in mind, the human aspects of Rabindranath the person also come up in his writing. Moreover, the amount of imagination the novelist has resorted to, in most cases, the reader gains the same liberality and sophistication that is initiated into the reader by reading Rabindranath or Rabindranath's literature through the creation of fiction in the novel. As a result, Sunil's reinvention of Rabindranath Tagore has made Bengalis more inquisitive. Although it is admitted that many novelists in later years have not been able to maintain this balance. With excessive freedom, they have portrayed Rabindranath a character without paying attention to artistry or reality. From that point of view, Sunil's novel can be a benchmark from both sides - where the human aspect has become the main objective along with Rabindranath's artistic expression.
