Politics in Indian Ethical Thought: The Context of the Panchatantra Puja Karmakar, Guest Lecturer, Department of Political Science, Bankura Christian College, West Bengal, India
In the rich tapestry of Indian knowledge tradition, warfare and diplomacy are not mere instruments of conflict rather they are sophisticated tools to uphold justice, ethical order, and societal harmony. This paper investigates these timeless principles through the lens of the Panchatantra , a collection often celebrated as moral tales yet brimming with strategic political wisdom. Drawing from classical texts like the Mahabharata, Ramayana, and Kautilya’s Arthashastra , the study unravels how intelligence, morality, and foresight guide leadership and decision-making. The Panchatantra , with its five key divisions like Mitra-bheda (separating friends), Mitra-lābha (gaining friends), Kākolūkīyam (strategic maneuvering), Lābha-pakṣaṇam (preserving gains), and Aparīkṣita-karakaṁ (avoiding rash acts) offers enduring lessons on alliances, conflict resolution, and prudent governance. By bridging ancient narratives with modern strategic relevance, this paper demonstrates that the wisdom of the Panchatantra remains an indispensable guide for contemporary diplomacy, ethical leadership, and effective governance.
